日前讀新聞，看到十二屆全國人大五次會議發言人談中印關係。她說中印關係要看到樹木，也要看到森林。意思就是看問題，要看細節，也要看大局。
木喻細節 林即大局
樹木比喻細節，森林比喻大局。如果眼裡只看到一棵一棵樹木，卻沒有察覺這是一整個樹林，就是只計較細節而忽略大局。這來自英文諺語not see the wood for the trees。
句中的wood並不是指木頭、木材，而是一片長滿樹的樹林。說某個人cannot see the wood for the trees，即是這個人只看到一棵棵的樹木trees，看不到或沒留意到這些樹木組成的整個樹林wood，即是說他太着眼於細節，沒有顧及事情的本質，或者只看到局部而忽略了大局，沒有掌握事物的全部真相。
這個以樹木和樹林構成的諺語可以有變化，例如美式英語會說forest森林，cannot see the forest for the trees。另外也有人說 miss the wood for the trees、be not able to see the forest for the trees，都是有負面、否定的含義。
見木見林 方夠全面
She was busy checking spelling, punctuations of the paper and overlooked the overall message and tone. She could not see the wood for the trees.
她忙着校對文章的拼寫和標點符號，忽略了全篇的文義和調子，只見木不見林。
He cannot understand the real problem of the company if he pays attention to just the small matters, such as furniture. He probably will not be able to see the forest for the trees.
如果他只着眼於微末的事情，例如家具，就不能看清公司的真正問題。他大抵只可以看到細節，不能看到大局。
Don't miss the wood for the trees. We have to know what is truly important now and shouldn't worry too much about the details.
不要只見樹木不見樹林。現在，我們必須弄清什麼是真正重要的，不必過分擔心一些細節問題。
看事物固然要從大處看，但細節亦往往很重要，不應該完全漠視。現在有人會反過來說can't see the trees for the wood，只見樹林不見樹木，形容某些人只講大局，而忽略一些重要的細節。不過，這並不是很常用。總而言之，兩樣都看見就最好。■Lina CHU [ linachu88@gmail.com ]
