Zhu Da(1626-1705), came from Nanchang, was a descendant of the Prince Ning, Zhu Quan, though he became a monk after the fall of the Ming dynasty. His paintings were rich in symbolic meanings expressing his inner emotions. He initially modelled his landscapes after Dong Qichang(1555-1636)but later his landscapes are tinged with a sense of wintry desolation. His bird-and-flower paintings, characterized by simplified and abstract forms executed with vigorous and expressive brushwork, were derived from the styles of the Ming masters Chen Chun(1483-1544)and Xu Wei(1521-1593), both of whom were noted for painting flowers and birds in the spontaneous style. Zhu Da, Hongren(1610-1664), Kuncan(1612-1673)and Shitao(1642-1707)were celebrated as the "Four Monks of the early Qing Dynasty".
