¡@A Number that Governs the Fate of the Sun

¡@In a cold winter evening, you can see Sirius, the brightest star, low in the eastern sky. Through a medium-sized telescope at high magnification one might be able to spot its faint companion star. This star, with the equivalent size as our Earth, is one of the first white dwarfs discovered. When a low mass star starts to fuse its core helium into carbon and oxygen, it becomes so hot that it expands rapidly and expels its outer atmosphere. What remains is a carbon-oxygen core that can no longer produce energy. The star collapses under its own weight to become a white dwarf.

¡@In 1930, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar(1910-1995)calculated that a star with an upper limit of 1.44 solar masses would end up eventually as a white dwarf. He was an ingenious scientist as well as a great teacher. Two of his outstanding students were Tsung-dao Lee and Chen-ning Yang. ¡@¡½ºÂªK±j¡@¸ê²`¤Ñ¤å·R¦nªÌ
