工聯會政務委員會一致決定，不會參加因公民黨與社民連5名議員辭職而引發的補選，意味立法會所有建制派成員都杯葛是次選舉。工聯會會長兼政委會主任鄭耀棠指出，他們不滿公社連濫用民主程序，將有關的補選變質，達致宣傳目標與效果，並提出「公投」、「起義」及「解放香港」等字眼，亦是香港不能承受的衝擊，因此他們認為不應參與這場鬧劇，而工聯會理事會下月中下旬會作最後決定。
鄭耀棠表示，公社連近期越趨激進的態度，令是次的補選變質。他說整個補選已是一小撮的人利用辭職濫用公帑，達致宣傳目標與效果，覺得不值得參與是次補選。
被問及距離該會理事會會議尚有一段時間，不參選的立場會否有「轉彎餘地」，或支持其他人參選時，鄭耀棠強調「無咩彎轉」，強調政委會不參與補選的態度清晰，目前只是程序問題。當3月中下旬理事會同意政委會的意見後，工聯會就會正式發信予34萬會員有關決定。工聯會副會長、政委會副主任黃國健補充說，工聯會既已將是次事件定性為一場鬧劇，也無可能性支持其他人參與。
FTU Decided to Boycott the By-elections
The political affairs committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions(FTU)reached a unanimous decision of not taking part in the by-elections triggered by the resignation of 5 legislative councilors from the Civic Party and the League of Social Democrats. That means all the pro-establishment parties with members sitting on the LegCo will boycott the by-elections. Cheng Yiu-tong, president of FTU and chief of the political affairs committee, said they are not happy with the Civic Party and the League of Social Democrats who have abused the democratic procedure, and changed the nature of the by-elections to achieve the goal and effect of publicizing themselves. He also pointed out that such expressions as "referendum", "uprising" and "liberating Hong Kong" can bring along impacts that Hong Kong cannot afford to take. For these reasons, FTU decided that they should not take part in such a farce and its board of directors will make a final decision in the latter part of next month.
Cheng Yiu-tong said that the Civic Party and the League of Social Democrats have been acting more and more radically lately, and so have changed the nature of the by-elections. He said, the by-elections are now used by a tiny group of people who seek the goal and effect of publicizing themselves by means of resigning and wasting public money. It is not worthy taking part in the by-elections.
When asked whether there will be a chance that FTU would reconsider its stance or support other candidates while awaiting the board meeting, Cheng stressed that there is "not much room" and reiterated that the position of the political affairs committee of not taking part is clear and unambiguous; what lies ahead is simply a matter of formality. When the board of directors meet and approve the recommendation put forth by the political affairs committee in the latter part of March, FTU will officially notify its 340,000 members in writing.
