很多考生對動詞（verb）之後要加的前置詞（preposition）不清不楚。老實說，傳統英文中學的教師很少教collocations（詞語組合），反而花很多時間教gerund、to infinitives及bare infinitives，或者conditional sentences及reported speech。不是因為老師不想教，而是大部分的grammar textbooks也沒有涵蓋collocations。若考生不是一名extensive reader，實在很難知道究竟應在obsess （使着迷）後面填上in或at。當然這是一個簡單例子。大多數考生應知道obsess後面要跟in，但筆者批改公開試卷時，也見到有不少考生用錯obsess at。以下列舉更多collocations的例子：
．Deprive of （剝奪）
They are deprived of their rights as citizens.
．Dispose of（賣掉/拋棄/處理）
He has disposed of his old car recently.
．Dissent from（不同意）
Many people dissented from the policy of the government.
．Distract from（分心）
Noise distracted Jenny from her drawing.
．Enquire about（查詢）/enquire into（調查）
We enquired about the trains to Oxford.
We must enquire further into the matter.
．Enroll in（報名）/ enroll as somebody（接納為）
Tom has enrolled in an evening class recently.
We enrolled Janice as a member of our English Club.
．Equip with（裝備）
The soldiers were equipped with latest weapons.
．Harmonize with（和諧/協調）
These colours don't harmonize with each other.
．Infect with（感染）
His wound was infected with germs.
