反傳統學堂之二
（編者註：下文將會透露劇情，不想知悉者請留意。）有些電影的精彩對白在於兩個人或以上的對話，活地阿倫在這方面屢有佳作；而有些電影的警語卻大多是主角的獨白與發表偉論，《暴雨驕陽》（Dead Poets Society）便是這樣。
為了鼓勵學生獨立思考，為了令他們活出真正生命、寫出真正詩歌，英文老師約翰．基廷（John Keating）用了不少看似怪誕的方法和看似荒謬的說話。例如有一次他叫學生Neil朗讀詩歌教科書的導言。
Neil: Understanding Poetry, by Dr. J. Evans Pritchard, Ph.D.... If the poem's score for perfection is plotted along the horizontal of a graph, and its importance is plotted on the vertical, then calculating the total area of the poem yields the measure of its greatness（《了解詩歌》，作者：伊凡士．普理查博士。......假若這首詩歌在完美方面的得分標示在圖的橫軸，而它的重要性標示在縱軸，那麼計算這首詩歌的總面積便可得出它的偉大程度）。
驚呆後照做 越搣越起勁
學生細心聆聽和緊記，有的甚至抄下筆記、畫下圖表。怎知基廷老師語出驚人。
Keating: Excrement. That's what I think of Mr. J. Evans Pritchard. We're not laying pipe, we're talking about poetry. Now I want you to rip out that page（糞便。這就是我對伊凡士．普理查博士的觀感。我們並非鋪設喉管，我們是談詩歌。現在我想你撕掉那一頁）。
整個課室的學生都呆了，以為基廷老師瘋了呢！但最後還是一一照做，而且愈撕愈起勁！最後不但撕掉那一頁，甚至把整個導言都撕掉了！基廷接着發表他的論點。
讀寫詩歌 全因為人
K: We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for（我們讀和寫詩歌，並非因為它可愛。我們讀和寫詩歌，是因為我們是人類的一分子，而人類是充滿熱情的。醫學、法律、商業、工程，這些全都是高貴的事業，而且對維持生命是必需的。但詩歌、美、浪漫、愛情，這些是我們生存的目的）。
