不單讀書，了解任何事情都最忌一知半解。這成語「一知半解」，英文可以怎麼說呢？一個慣常的說法是have / with only a smattering of，當中的smattering解作「略知」、「淺知」，通常都是指在語言方面。愛爾蘭作家史杜克（Bram Stoker）著名恐怖小說《吸血鬼德克拉》（Dracula）的第一章，英國新牌律師Jonathan Harker描述自己在德國一家酒店點餐時便說：I found my smattering of German very useful here; indeed, I don't know how I should be able to get on without it（我發覺我只懂一點的德文在這兒十分有用；事實上，若沒有它，我不知道我應當可以如何過活）。
應用範圍廣 不限於語言
至於短語have / with only a smattering of則不限於語言，而可泛指任何方面的一知半解。美國幽默作家馬克吐溫（Mark Twain）的第一部長篇小說，是與同樣是作家的好友華納（Charles Dudley Warner）共撰的《鍍金時代》（The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today），第五十章這樣描述身處上流社會的Philip Sterling如何倒霉：with only a smattering of civil engineering, he is at his mother's house, fretting and fuming over his ill-luck（他對土木工程一知半解，因而只好留在母親屋中，對自己的運滯感到苦惱與氣憤）。
但have / with only a smattering of用作描述語言也可。例如專門撰寫少女故事的愛爾蘭多產女作家米德（LT Meade）的小說《薔薇時代：少女故事》（The Time of Roses: A Story for Girls），第二十三章談到Florence時這樣描述她：her knowledge of foreign languages was extremely small; she could read French fairly well, but could not speak it; she had only a smattering of German（她的外語知識極少；她閱讀法語的能力不錯，但不懂說；她對德語所知甚少）。
