Xi-Ma meeting: a new page in cross-Strait relations

Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou, leaders across the Taiwan Strait, exchanged views on promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations as they met in Singapore on 7 October. Being the first meeting between the leaders of China and Taiwan since 1949, it has deepened mutual trust between the two and thus laid a solid foundation for peaceful and stable cooperation.

In recent years, both sides have been working on improving ties in accordance with the 1992 Consensus and the one-China principle. In retrospect, the development of cross-Strait relations in the last two decades has been tortuous but progressive. From the meetings between semi-official organisations, to formal meetings between officials from both sides, up till the historic Xi-Ma meeting today, the one-China principle has always been serving as the means to the well-being of Chinese compatriots across the Strait.

Xi Jinping has been an ardent advocate of high-level talks across the Strait. He met with then Kuomintang (KMT) Honorary Chairmen Lien Chan, Wu Po-hsiung and then vice-chairman Vincent Siew back in 2013. He again met with the new KMT head Eric Chu this May, and brought forth a five-point proposal for the two sides to jointly build a community of shared destiny. These are signs of Xi calling for mutual respect and stability both across the Strait and between the Communist and Nationalist parties.

The ideas from Xi's proposal transcended the historical grudges between the two sides. They are also seen as a gesture of goodwill and friendship that enabled the historic summit between Xi and Ma.

According to a Taiwanese poll, 80% of the participants backed the meeting, believing that it could promote peaceful cross-Strait ties. The successful meeting between the two from both sides of the Taiwan Strait has proven the Chinese people has the political wisdom to solve historical complications.
