A local Lantau benefits entire HK

In response to opposition toward the Lantau development, the Secretary for Development Paul Chan pointed out that apart from local opinions the overall needs of Hong Kong should be prioritized.

Chan considered concerns over environmental impact unnecessary because economic and housing development would chiefly dot along the North Lantau Corridor, while the southern part of Lantau had been recommended for conservation purposes.

He said that apart from local opinions, the overall needs of Hong Kong should be taken into consideration. His words have revealed an important perspective in observing and tackling social problems, that is the balance of local and overall interests. From a small number of organisations and some individuals' point of view, conservation of nature is to maintain the status quo and protect Lantau Island from further development. However, such resistance to further development does not befit the overall development needs of Hong Kong.

Lantau Island is the largest of Hong Kong's islands and almost doubles the size of Hong Kong Island. It offers the most promising prospect for development because the majority of land on the Island remains untouched. Using the resources there properly would ease difficult situations like land supply shortage and the lack of diversity in industry.

And when the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Airport three runway system and Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link is complete, Lantau will have the potential to serve as a regional hub in the Greater Pearl River Delta. This would benefit Hong Kong's integration with the Western Pearl River Delta and contribute to Hong Kong's overall sustainability.

Once the general direction is determined, thorough discussions will help strike a balance between economic and social efficiencies, especially to find ways to retain local characteristics and keep minimal the impacts on the environment.¡½Jeffrey Tse [ywc_jeffrey@hotmail.com]
