■Bite the bullet是指「硬着頭皮」。 資料圖片早前與一班朋友聚會談天。席間一位朋友憶述當年為賺錢買樓，咬緊牙關，辛苦工作支付首期和償還貸款，不期然用了英文諺語bite the bullet以及work my ass off。今次就說一下這兩句短語。
先說bite the bullet。字面意義是「咬住子彈」，實際意思是要做或接受一些艱難的事情，雖然不愉快，但也不能避免，唯有硬着頭皮。同時，此短語亦可指困難時刻咬緊牙關，表現出勇氣。
Bite the bullet據稱源自戰場
據說這句話源自麻醉藥發明前，士兵作戰受傷要動手術時，就咬住一顆子彈，助其忍受痛苦。故此，bite the bullet就象徵硬着頭皮、不哼一聲地接受一些困難情況。
The pain in your teeth will worsen. You had better bite the bullet and see the dentist.
你的牙痛將會變劇。還是不要逃避了，鼓起勇氣，去看牙醫吧。

Work your ass off通俗 正式場合不宜用
至於work your ass off（捱到屁股也鬆脫），其實這是一句非常口語化的俗語，在一些輕鬆而非正式的場合使用，有點通俗，但充分表示十分勤勞地工作。其實ass與arse、butt或 backside都是俚語，同樣指臀部，所以這短語亦有其他寫法，例如work your arse off、work your butt off、work your backside off。懸樑刺股，非常刻苦。
He worked his ass off for the project.
為了這個計劃，他沒命地幹。
They work their butts off for the company though business is not going on well.
雖然生意不怎麼好，但是他們依然不辭勞苦地為公司苦幹。
朋友說：I worked my ass off because I wanted to buy a house. Then, many people in Hong Kong had to bite the bullet to pay the mortgage of their houses. 意思就是「我胼手胝足地工作，就是為了置業。那時候，香港很多人為了償還置業按揭，不得不咬緊牙關地苦幹。」
