有些時候會聽到這樣形容一個人：He has delusions of grandeur. 究竟是什麼意思？什麼是delusions of grandeur？
Delusion錯覺
先說delusion。這個字的解釋是「錯覺」、「誤解」，或是指一種狀態，相信了一些不是事實的東西：
He was under the delusion that his plan would be successful.
他有一個錯覺，以為他的計劃會成功。
I don't know why some people have the delusion that property prices will fall.
我不知道人們為什麼幻想樓價會下跌。
再說grandeur。這是名詞，有「壯麗」、「偉大」的意思，可以用來形容地方或物品，亦可以表示「重要」、「顯赫」的意思，譬如形容一個人的地位或他自覺的地位：
He was fascinated by the grandeur of the mountains.
他被壯麗的群山景致迷住了。
He speaks in such a way to show his grandeur.
他說話的態度常要顯示自己的重要地位。
過度妄想須警惕
把兩個字串成短語delusions of grandeur，就是幻想自己有某些重要性或權力，但實際上並不存在，只是他自己的錯覺。
這原本是精神病科的用語，自大型妄想，是妄想症的一個分類。患者相信自己很重要，擁有過人的能力和很大的權力。He has delusions of grandeur，是指這人有自大型妄想症。
不過，這個解作自大妄想的短語亦引申指一個人自命不凡、錯誤地自以為自己很重要和很有地位，說某人有delusions of grandeur，可解作他自大、自以為是，所以很多時用來諷刺人妄自尊大。
You have to guard against delusions of grandeur. Do not have the impression that you are superior to all the other people.
你必須避免妄自尊大。不要以為自己比所有其他人都優越。
Is he having delusions of grandeur? He should know that he is not in control of the situation.
他是不是有自大妄想症？他應該知道事情實際上不由他控制。
His speech simply shows that he is a brainless politician with delusions of grandeur.
他的演說只顯示他是個無腦的政客，妄自尊大。
Without delusions of grandeur, I think my plan will work well.
這不是自大狂，我認為我的計劃可行。
過度妄想固然是病態，自大、自以為是、自以為了不起，也是不少人的通病。所以，delusions of grandeur不一定指人有精神病，也可形容人的品行，適當地運用是一個有趣的用語。
