記得英國哲學家羅素(Bertrand Russell)曾說過：
“The world is a higgledy-piggledy place, with things pleasant and unpleasant occurring in no particular sequence.” (這世界亂七八糟，好事壞事隨時發生。)

這一陣子，更是認同這種想法，周遭亂哄哄的，教人心煩意亂，想起北宋女詞人李清照的《聲聲慢》名句：
「尋尋覓覓，冷冷清清，淒淒慘慘戚戚。」
不是為賦新詞強說愁，而是想與大家談談英語世界內的 “reduplication”，疊詞是也！
李清照一口氣用了14個疊字，悼亡夫、嘆國破，聲聲嗚嗚咽咽，疊字用得恰到好處。另一世界的羅素，用了“higgledy-piggledy”形容亂世，也是一語道盡世情。
嬰兒用語很多是疊詞
英語世界內的疊詞也不少，有些是兩字完全相同的，舉例如：
1. Give him a bonbon and he'll stop crying ! (給他一塊糖，他就不哭啦！)
2. There is a fifty-fifty chance they might win. (他們有五成機會勝出。)
3. Going to the kitchen is a no-no for toddlers. (千萬不要讓剛學會走路的孩童進入廚房。)
4. He is a goody-goody and has no opinions of his own. (他是一個善於討好賣乖的人，毫無主見。)
很多這類疊詞是嬰孩用語，如“baa-baa”(羊咩)、“quack-quack”(鴨叫)、“moo-moo”(牛叫)、“night-night”(晚安)、“poo-poo”(屎)、“wee-wee”(尿尿)等。
但也有很多疊詞並非重複用同一字構成，而是用同一聲韻的字來做成的，如“bow-wow”(狗兒汪汪叫) 、“hanky-panky”(欺騙行為)、“hoity-toity”(自命不凡的)、“namby-pamby”(多愁善感的)等。
