某個遊樂協會訂立了新的遊戲規則，在發給會員的備忘錄中有以下一句句子：
I suggest you to acquire a copy of the new laws from the association for reference.
這句子的意思是：
我建議你們從總會取得一份新的規例以備參考。
意思不難理解，提議會員留意新規例，拿取一份新版本作為參考。意思雖易明，但文法卻錯了。這是一個常見的錯誤，問題在於suggest的用法。
Suggest後要加賓語
Suggest解作提議、建議，是一個及物動詞（transitive verb），後面需要加上賓語（object），表達所作的建議，很多時候會用上一個名詞，例如下面的plan和restaurant：
They suggested a plan to curb inflation.
他們建議了一個對抗通脹的計劃。
Can you suggest a good restaurant for the gathering?
你可以提議一間好的餐廳給大家聚會嗎？
賓語可用動名詞代替
然而，在賓語的位置，亦可用動名詞（gerund）代替，例如下面的holding和increasing：
He suggested holding a meeting to discuss the problem.
他提議召開會議討論這個問題。
Some people suggest increasing the supply of small and medium sized flats.
一些人建議增建中小型單位的住宅。
這些句子中動名詞的部分不可以用不定詞（to + infinitive）代替。
He suggested to hold a meeting ... ×
Some people suggest to increase the supply ... ×
這些句子的文法都是錯的。
不可直加不定詞格式
如果要建議某人做某事，同樣不會在後面用不定詞格式。
He suggested his father to see a doctor. ×
I suggest you to look more carefully into the case. ×
以上句子的文法是不對的。而文章起首的例子，亦是犯了這個錯誤。
在這些情況，須在suggest之後用名詞句that+句子，上面的例子應寫成：
He suggested that his father should see a doctor.
他建議父親應該去看醫生。
I suggest that you should look more carefully into the case.
我建議你更仔細地審視這個個案。
很多時that和should都可以隱藏，而句子會寫成：
He suggested (that) his father see a doctor.
I suggest (that) you look more carefully into the case.
文首提及的備忘錄句子，正確寫法可以是：
I suggest that you should acquire a copy of the new laws from the association for reference.
I suggest that you acquire a copy of the new laws from the association for reference.
I suggest you acquire a copy of the new laws from the association for reference.
有些時候，文法問題並不會影響意思表達，但是如果把句子寫得正確，可以令文章讀起來正規一點、順暢一些。
