今次談兩個外形相似,但意思截然不同的字。一個是negligible,另一個是negligent。兩個字都會經常用到,亦經常在報章見到。
先說negligible。用negligible形容某些事物,是說它們數量太少,或不太重要,不會造成影響,無需要擔心或加以考慮,例如:
These vegetables should be safe for consumption. Traces of radioactive substances have been found but the amount is negligible.
這些蔬菜可以安全食用。雖然發現極微量的輻射物質,但是分量微不足道。
The profit is almost negligible and not worth mentioning.
盈利少的幾乎不值得關注,微不足道。
My knowledge in Chinese medicine is really negligible. I can't give you any advice.
我對中醫的知識真的少得可憐。我不能給你任何意見。
可形容人不受重視
當然,這形容詞亦可引伸形容人,說這個人一點都不重要,不獲重視,例如:
The service of the shop was unacceptable. We stood there for ten minutes as if we were invisible or negligible.
這家商店的服務不可接受。我們站在那裡十分鐘,竟然當我們不存在或者不必理會。
Negligent常見於形容人
不要把negligible與negligent混淆了。同樣是形容詞,negligent通常用來形容人,而不是事物。意思是這個人或這些人對自己的責任不小心,疏忽職守,引致錯失。例如:
The patients were given the wrong medicine because the nurses in that hospital were negligent in their duties.
病人給錯配藥物,全因那醫院的護士疏忽職守。
The accident would not have happened if the teacher had not been negligent in looking after the students.
如果教師沒有疏忽照顧學生,這意外便不會發生。
He was punished for negligent driving.
他因為不小心駕駛而受懲罰。
Neglectful指不重視某事物
有一個字的意義與negligent差不多,外形也相似,就是neglectful,但neglectful泛指人對某些人或事不著意,不重視,並不一定是疏於職責或工作。例如:
She has been rather neglectful of her appearance lately.
她最近不大重視自己的儀容。
這些字都跟neglect(忽略)有關,所以串法相似,但使用時不要混亂了。重溫一次,negligible是少得可以忽略、微不足道,negligent是疏忽職守。
