8年前，英國人選出有史以來最受歡迎的百本小說，名為Big Read 100，結果兩位作家有5本著作入選，並列第一。我們上周討論了舉世聞名的狄更斯（Charles Dickens），今天介紹另一位作家。他在英國家喻戶曉，但各位可能從沒聽過他的大名呢。他叫普萊契（Terry Pratchett, 1948-）。
普萊契不但有5部作品入選百大，更另有10本小說入圍二百強，而狄更斯只有兩本。從這個角度看，普萊契比狄更斯更受歡迎；事實上，普萊契是1990年代全英國最暢銷作家。他最著名的作品是Discworld（《碟形宇宙》）小說系列，而在他15本入圍小說中，有14本都屬於《碟形宇宙》，只有第68位的Good Omens例外，該書由他與著名科幻小說作家蓋曼（Neil Gaiman, 1960-）共撰。
普萊契只有極少作品出版了中譯本，這兒列舉他入選百大的5本書，以及它們的中文暫譯名稱－－第65位：Mort（《死亡》）；第68位：Good Omens（《好預兆》）；第69位：Guards! Guards!（《守衛！守衛！》）；第73位：Night Watch（《守夜》）；第93位：The Colour of Magic（《魔法的色彩》）。
龜象托碟形宇宙
The Colour of Magic是Discword系列的首部，Pratchett開始時介紹這個碟形宇宙如何由一海龜四巨象承托著：Great A'Tuin the turtle comes, swimming slowly through the interstellar gulf, hydrogen frost on his ponderous limbs, his huge and ancient shell pocked with meteor craters（海龜Great A'Tuin來了，在星際鴻溝中他緩緩浮游，氫霜散播於笨拙四肢，古老巨殼滿布流星坑）。Through sea-sized eyes that are crusted with rheum and asteroid dust He stares fixedly at the Destination（大如海洋的雙眸，鋪上層層目垢和小行星塵；透過兩眼，他目不轉睛凝視目的地）。In a brain bigger than a city, with geological slowness, He thinks only of the Weight（他腦袋的體積比城市還要大，速度如地質變化般緩慢，想著的只有重擔）。
Most of the weight is of course accounted for by Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen, the four giant elephants upon whose broad and star-tanned shoulders the Disc of the World rests（大部分的重擔，當然來自Berilia、Tubul、Great T'Phon和Jerakeen四頭巨象，牠們給星星曬黑的寬闊肩膀，承托著「宇宙之碟」）。
創新字描繪世界
既是新穎宇宙，作者須費神描述，並要杜撰不少新字：There are, of course, two major directions of the Disc: Hubward and Rimward（碟子當然有兩個主要方向：「向心」和「向邊」）。But since the Disc itself revolves at the rate of once every eight hundred days（但由於碟子每八百天自轉一周）......there are two lesser directions, which are Turnwise and Widdershins（它尚有兩個次要方向，就是「順轉」與「逆轉」）。
「碟形宇宙」有否地圖？普萊契說：
There are no maps. You can't map a sense of humor（這兒沒有地圖，幽默感是無法繪成地圖的）。
