寫辯論式文章的時候，通常會有自己的意見或立論，討論正反兩面，令自己的意見看起來更有說服力，然後再在結論時重申立場。這類發表意見的文章，許多時會在結論部分見到短語all in all。例如：
All in all, euthanasia should not be legalized.
總而言之，安樂死不應合法化。
用all in all作結論，是概括立場，亦表示已經綜合了各方面的情形。一如上面的例子，總的來說，安樂死不應合法化。這是考慮了正反各方面的結論，表達一個基本意見。
概略各種看法
日常生活中亦經常有許多論題會涉及各種考慮，牽涉多個不同的情況，要簡單地表達一個概略意見可以用all in all，例如：
He has made a few mistakes but all in all he does his work well.
他犯了一些錯誤，但總的來說，他做的工作很好。
All in all, Hong Kong is a good place to visit. There may be some complaints about tour guides in Hong Kong but according to a survey, Hong Kong is one of the ten most popular cities for tourists.

All things considered 總結各點
除了all in all，還有許多意思類似的短語，例如on the whole和broadly speaking等，有相同用途，可靈活運用。其中一個是all things considered，這表示考慮了各個情況後總括而言，並不是一概而論。例如：
The actors in the movie are not that brilliant, but the plot of the movie is good and there is a meaningful message. All things considered, I would still recommend this movie.
戲中演員並不那麼出色，但是電影橋段很好，也蘊含很有意義的訊息。整體而言，我會推薦這齣電影。

By and large整合意見
另一個較特別的是by and large，這跟all in all很相似，表示將所有相關的事概括而論，總的來說，例如：

By and large, people welcome the introduction of the new ordinance.
總的來說，人們歡迎訂立這條新法例。
表達意見時謹慎一些，用這樣的短語，就可表明這些意見是一個總結概論，並非以偏概全，沒有忽視不同論點。
