「短語動詞」(phrasal verbs)由同一動詞配上不同的介詞,化成不同意思,變化實在多不勝數。在此與大家研習的,只是一些較常見的例子,以提示大家多加留意此類詞組配搭,各自搜集更多類同的,充實自己的詞庫。
為此專欄,我常常思索、查究、列載著,是自我進修、屢獲奇趣、享受樂事,實得益不淺。

Go「去、前往」
If you are ready, go ahead!
你若準備好,開始(工作)吧!
Once we give our word, we should not go back on it.
凡是許下承諾,則不應背約、食言。
With his skills, he should go far.
賦有特殊技能的他必有成就。(指前途無限)
In examination, go over your answer scripts carefully.
考試時,小心檢視你的答卷。
With careful preparation, the event should go off well.
經精密籌備,盛事應可順利進行。
Keep「保留,保管」
Keep up your good work.
繼續努力做好你的事務。
He walks so fast I cannot keep up with him.
他步伐急勁,我實在不能跟上。
Signs warn us to keep off the grass in parks.
告示牌提示,要避開公園的草地。
Students will be punished if they keep on talking among themselves in class.
學生若在上課時不斷交談,將會被罰。
Let「讓、准許」
Although he misbehaved, his teacher let him off lightly.
雖然他不守規,老師仍輕輕放過他。
I have high hopes of you, do not let me down.
我對你期望很高,切勿使我失望。(勿辜負我對你的寄望)
Look「看、注視」
Babysitters look after other people's children.
保姆為別人照顧兒女。
Look at the traffic lights for the signal to cross.
望著交通燈等待過馬路的訊號。
The selection board will look for the best candidate for appointment.
遴選小組要尋找最優秀的人士才聘用。
I look forward to your reply and thank you in anticipation.
我期待你的回音而預先致謝。
Do not look down on anyone, however humble in status. 儘管人家身份卑微,亦不應鄙視之。
Look out ! There is a car coming.
當心啊!有車來哩。
The authorities promised to look into the matter.
有關當局承諾調查事件。
