Means作為名詞，除了可以解作「方法」，亦可解作「財產、金錢」。今次說的是後者。
解作「金錢」的時候，means是眾數名詞，沒有單數，指資產、收入，特別指一些可供使用、應付某種需要的資金，而且是足夠的數目。例如：
I don't have the means to buy a flat in Hong Kong.
我沒有資金在香港置業。
You can own as many properties as you like if you have the means.
如果你有足夠的錢，你想擁有多少物業，就可以擁有多少物業。
Beyond one's means 入不敷出
英諺有所謂「beyond one's means」，形容開支比收入多，入不敷出，錢不夠用。而「within one's means」就是開支在收入之內，入息足夠生活。例如：
He will probably choose a local university. Studying abroad is beyond the means of his family.
他很可能選擇入讀本地的大學。他家的經濟狀況不足以支持他到外國留學。
He is very careful with money because he wants to live within his means.
他理財很小心，因為他希望自己的生活量入為出。
Means test 資產審查
近日香港人討論得最多的應該是「means test（資產審查）」，即是經濟狀況調查，多用以審定是否符合條件接受政府資助。
In many countries, there are means tests for different government aids and welfare.
在許多國家，各種政府援助和福利計劃都設有資產審查。
People have different opinions on whether there should be a means test for the old-age living allowance.
人們對於長者生活津貼應否設有資產審查意見紛紜。
形容詞「means-tested」可用來形容需要資產審查的社會福利。
When needed, citizens here can apply for the means-tested legal aid.
如有需要，本地公民可以申請法律援助，但要經過資產審查。

你是否同意所有福利計劃都應該設有資產審查？
Means是資產、金錢，還包含足夠生活開支或應付某種需要的意思。故此，means test不僅是審查資產，更是判斷資產是否足夠應付需要。 ■Lina CHU
