攻克Listening之二

上期與考生分享有關listening的應試技巧。今期會探討如何處理Part B Integrated Writing部分。
與Paper 1 Reading Comprehension一樣，考生在Paper 3可選答B1或B2。最好的策略是，他們應在考試前，決定選答B1或B2，而不應入到試場後才選擇，避免浪費時間。無論選擇B1或B2，題目都會測試考生以下的skills：
1. 抄錄筆記（note-taking）的技巧；
2. 因應問題要求，從不同篇章中找出重點，然後加以整合；
3. 概述（summary）的技巧。
速讀資料 刪除無謂內容
其實，要應付這份卷，考生要「快、狠、準」才能取得理想分數。現在，讓筆者解釋何謂「快、狠、準」吧！
「快」：在考試前應盡量訓練速讀的技巧，亦應改掉一些阻礙速讀的習慣，如不自覺地重複閱讀已看的部分，務求在考試時能盡快看完data files的所有資料。
「狠」：必須狠心地刪除所有與題目要求沒有關係的資料。抄得太多無謂資料，不但影響分數，亦會浪費時間。
「準」：除選擇的資料要準確外，必須運用自己的文字準確地把答案表達出來；換言之，應掌握好summary的技巧。
要寫好summary，除要留意概述部分有無保留原文重點外，也要明白概述與原文在文字上不能太相似。考生不妨運用以下兩個方法，令summary更有自己的風格：
1. 用同義詞：假如原文用了holiday，可選用vacation或break去取代它。
2. 改寫字句：假如作者用了simple sentences去表達某個concept，不妨用compound或complex sentences去改寫原文。
Example：A group of teens shouted obscenities at the mainland visitors in Tsim Sha Tsui recently. The purpose of their actions is to oppose the influx of more mainland tourists to Hong Kong.
Rewrite：Opposing the coming of mainland visitors to Hong Kong, some radical teenagers recently hurled abuse at mainland visitors in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Practice
Following the instructions given, rewrite the following sentences.
1. Jonathan has dieted for two months. Jonathan has lost 20 pounds. (Using a sentence opener)
2. There has been a drastic drop in the usage of disposable plastic bags since the introduction of plastic bag levy. Alternatives such as reusable shopping bags have become more popular. (Combine the two sentences using because of)
Answers
1. Having dieted for two months, Jonathan has lost 20 pounds.
2. Because of the introduction of the plastic bag levy, alternatives such as reusable shopping bags have become more popular.
