Chip是一個常見的英文字。食品有薯片「potato chips」，信用卡上面有晶片「chip」，電腦有芯片「chip」，甚至賭桌上的籌碼也叫作「chip」。
其實，「chip」 的意思是小塊、小片，例如：
The workers left a lot of wood chips on the floor.
工人在地板留下很多木碎片。
You can put some banana chips or strawberry chips in your porridge.
你可以在糊裡放一些香蕉片或草莓片。
源於英碼頭工人運動
美國以前有一個習俗，年輕人會把一片小木塊放在肩膀上，意思是向人挑戰，找架打，看看有誰能把這片小木塊弄下來。這個習俗衍生出短語 「have a chip on one's shoulder」（肩挑木片找對手）。不過，亦有人把這短語的歴史追溯至更早的英國碼頭工人運動，稱碼頭工人肩挑木片抗爭。
今天這短語的意思是帶着一副憤世嫉俗的態度，總覺得別人欺負他或看他不起，懷着這種憤憤不平、容易被人惹怒的態度，往往是當事人自卑，可能是他以前曾受到不公平對待，或者覺得自己在某些事情上有所不足，所以常常顯得很憤懣，或者對一些事物過分敏感而產生好鬥的反應。
He has a chip on his shoulder whenever people talk about his past, especially the failure of his first marriage.
每當有人提到他的過去，特別是提到他第一段婚姻的失敗，他就會顯得憤怒。
These people have chips on their shoulders and are always complaining about the management.
這些人常懷憤懣之心，總是在抱怨管理層。
He has a chip on his shoulder about not having a university degree and is always belligerent towards the academics.
沒有大學學位是他心裡的一根刺，所以他常對學者不友善，有敵對的心態。
「Belligerent」一字是形容人帶有敵對態度，要跟人打架或爭吵，與having a chip on one's shoulder 有一點相似的意味。
肩上挑着一片木塊，常顯得憤世嫉俗，與人敵對，其實並不是可取的態度。■Lina CHU
