Quiet moments in Japanese silent cafˆms
¦]¦¹¥þ¬q¥i^Ķ¦p¤U¡GRecently a growing number of "silent cafˆms" are opening across Tokyo in Japan. The environment of these cafˆms has no difference from general coffee shops, but visitors are not allowed to speak and can only make enquiries and orders by writing in notepads.
Chihiro Higashikokubaru, a 23-year-old nurse, travelled 90 minutes on her day off from her home in Odawara of Kanagawa prefecture to a silent cafˆm in Toyko to enjoy some silent moments, sipping tea and doing some drawings. She had learnt from magazines and twitter about the cafˆmand loved the idea so much, then came to visit it and felt that it was not easy to find tranquil places in Toyko.
The 45-year-old owner Taiki Watanabe had worked in another cafˆmbefore which was very noisy. He had wanted a quiet space and came up with the idea of running a silent cafˆm. Now there are roughly 200 visitors coming to the cafˆmevery week and they are prohibited from talking. Most come on their own to enjoy reading or drawing and release themselves from the pressure of daily lives.¡½Ãe¹Å»ö
