Going digital, The Independent stops print
¦]¦¹¥þ¬q¥i^Ķ¦p¤U¡GThe 30-year-old British newspaper The Independent published its last print edition on March 25, including four features looking back at its history. Its final editorial said the "bold transition" of The Independent from traditional newspaper to online media had set an example for other newspapers around the world to follow, while the paper would turn a new chapter in its history and its spirit would flourish still.
Staff at The Independent posted a video online about banging desks, an old tradition to mark the departure of colleagues. Founded in 1986, The Independent has been well-known for its eye-catching and controversial front pages and photos. At the peak of its popularity, it had a circulation of over 420,000 per day, which dropped to only 40,000 due to the rise of online media in recent years. The newspaper's owner Evgeny Lebedev announced the closure of the print edition last month, saying that the operations of journalism had entirely changed such that the newspaper should also keep pace with the times and turn to the digital format.
The website of The Independent has nearly 70 million subscribers worldwide, and its holding company ESI Media has also launched a new subscription app offering a virtual print edition. The company is also going to sell off "i", a sister publication launched in 2010, with an estimated price of ¢G25 million (approximately HK$274 million), while the money received will then be invested in its online media.¡½Ãe¹Å»ö
