一年容易又中秋，每逢中秋，我媽媽都會邀請親朋戚友到我家做節。她會早幾天便開始忙碌地準備當晚的食物，正因如此，我必定被安排去做家務以及大掃除。
一星期前，媽媽發短訊給我說：There are a great amount of clothes left unworn in your wardrobe. Throw them away! 隨之，我發現原來她對number和amount的理解不清晰。
其實，當我們要指示不明確的數量時，我們可選擇用amount、quantit或者number。
Amount不可數 Quantity可數
1. Amount和quantity通常用於非人類或動物的名詞，如感受、食物等。前者通常用於「不可數名詞」，如money（金錢）、work（工作量）等；quantity則用於「可數名詞」，如books （書本）、resources（資源）等。例句：
I have a huge amount of homework tonight.
我今晚有一大堆的功課要做。
We can reduce the amount of waste by reusing plastic bags.
我們可以通過重用膠袋來減少垃圾量。
Martina has quantities of branded handbags.
Martina有多個名牌手袋。
Number生物死物都可用
2. Number則可用於各種「可數名詞」，包括動物、人類及死物，如people（人數）、ideas（意見）等。例句：
There are a number of youngsters participating in the music festival.
參加音樂節的年輕人很多。
The number of people caught shoplifting has decreased since cameras were installed in many shops.
自從很多商店安裝了閉路電視以後，因偷竊被拘捕的人數就減少了。
最後，媽媽可以說我有a large quantity of clothes在衣櫃裏，因為clothes是可數名詞。
