In English you can light a fire by "striking a match". A safety match is one that will only start burning if you strike it on a special surface on its box. "Striking" has another meaning also - attracting a lot of attention. So the inventor says that inventing the match was a striking achievement (because it made him famous, and because it is necessary to strike the match to make it work).
