很多同學之所以覺得Paper 1 Reading卷困難，原因之一是他們平時較少閱讀英文文章，以為只要懂得考試技巧便能應付。可事實是，如果只靠考試技巧，對文章的理解力低，又或者是同學本身閱讀速度緩慢，根本很難考取到好的成績。今天將會跟同學們討論一下speed reading和skim reading。
Speed reading
速讀是平時多閱讀後產生的結果；能夠比別人閱讀得快，對考試當然有很大幫助。同學們閱讀速度慢，除了可能是缺少練習外，亦有可能是犯上一些不良閱讀習慣，例如一邊閱讀一邊發聲（subvocalisation），又可能是慣性重讀（reread）之前已看過的段落，影響速度。
要提升閱讀速度，同學們可在每次閱讀時，有意識地鼓勵自己讀快一點，持之以恒，一定可改善閱讀的速度。
Skim reading
與speed reading不同，skim reading指只看重點，不讀全文；因此，若能好好掌握skim reading的技巧，有助同學們在短時間內知道文章的大意（gist），並可能找出每段main idea（重點）的所在。要找出每段重點所在，同學們應留意以下的步驟：
main idea大多放置在段落頭、中、尾三個部分；所以同學們應先看看那些地方有沒有main idea；倘若找到一句看似是main idea的句子，例如一句general statement，同學們不妨問問自己：段落中其他句子能否develop這個可能的main idea。如答案是肯定的，那麼同學們找到的main idea應該正確；如答案是否定的話，那麼同學們可能要重新找過。
如果段落中沒有main idea，同學們可能要回顧之前的段落，看看main idea是否在之前的段落中--有時候，一個main idea可能被多於一段去develop。
亦有可能是，同學們要靠文中的details推敲（infer）出段落中的main idea。這不太常見，但亦由於它不常見，對同學們亦會更困難。
在考試中，同學們需要運用skim reading及speed reading skills（我並不認為只靠skim reading就可考獲優異的成績）；因此，你們應好好練習這兩種技巧。
