近日的熱門新聞當然是美國總統大選，未到最後不知誰勝誰負。兩位候選人選前民調、選後點票，數字時高時低，有上有落，難分勝負。選舉和比賽一樣，強勢時希望乘勝追擊，弱勢時則希望扭轉局勢。英文說「扭轉弱勢」，可用短語turn the tables。
字面上turn the tables是轉動桌子，但這不是真正意思，turn the tables其實說的是改變局面，令自己變得有優勢。中世紀流行桌面遊戲game of tables，即是board games，例如backgammon百家樂棋，是用棋盤和骰子在桌上玩的遊戲。棋盤分兩邊，對賽時落後的一方希望形勢逆轉，將棋盤轉動對調，將領先的一邊棋局換轉為自己的一方，讓自己容易獲勝，這就是turn the tables，當然在真正比賽中是不可能的，轉動棋盤只是比喻在弱勢時扭轉局勢、從後趕上，令形勢對自己有利，更有勝算。而turn the tables on someone就是指在比賽或競選時較弱的一方逆轉現況，令原本比自己有優勢的人處於不利位置，令自己更有機會勝出，反敗為勝。

他現時在民意調查中落後於對手。你認為他可以扭轉形勢嗎？
The team didn't play well in the first half of the match, but they managed to turn the tables after the break. They scored in the second half and finally won the cup.
這球隊在上半場表現欠佳，但他們在中場休息後終能扭轉局勢，下半場取得入球，最終贏得獎盃。

除了轉動棋盤外，亦有轉變潮汐turn the tide的短語，就是說「扭轉潮流」，此語說的不是雙方對弈，而是以海洋的潮汐漲退tide比喻社會潮流趨勢，所以turn the tide是扭轉傾向，改變事情的趨向。
The company has turned the tide and made online shopping a trend for everyone.
該公司革新了時尚，令網上購物成為人人趨慕的購物潮流。
The government is trying to turn the tide, hoping to make the new policy more acceptable to the public.
政府正嘗試扭轉局勢，希望令新政策更為大眾接受。
The designer wants to turn the tide and create a new fashion.
該設計師想改變潮流，創造新時尚。
此外亦有意思有點相似的turn the corner「有了轉機」。Corner 是轉角，也是困境，turn是轉彎，所以turn the corner即是拐彎，過了難關，轉危為安。意思是經過了困難或難過的時間，情況或心情都好轉。
He was very ill after the accident, but he has turned the corner.
發生意外後，他病的厲害，但是終於渡過難關。
After a whole year of recession, we hope that we can turn the corner in the coming month.
經過一整年的衰退，我們希望下個月可以出現轉機。
Life has not been easy but they hang in there. Now they are turning the corner.
生活一度艱難，但是他們挺住了。現在，他們有了轉機，情況好轉。
競賽的時候落後了，卻能反敗為勝、扭轉敗局是turn the tables；改變時尚趨勢、扭轉潮流是turn the tide；難關渡過了、有了轉機、扭轉局面是turn the corner。不管是哪種情況，在不甚順境的情況下扭轉局勢都是一項挑戰，需要努力，逆境自強，亦要用正當方法。
