Homonyms系列七之一
八十年代在倫敦任職時,曾在一輯電視節目中,聽到主持的一段話,至今難忘,大概如下:
"The Chinese like to walk' their dogs."
「中國人喜歡帶愛犬散步。」
隨後,主持嚴肅地註釋:
"......yes, they wok' their dogs."
原來俏皮的節目主持在說雙關語(pun),指中國人愛用「鑊」煮食狗肉!「wok」是鑊也,與「walk」同音異義。
其實,英文的詞彙中存在不少同音、同形或既同音亦同形,但意義則完全兩樣的字,統稱homonym,表面差不多,實質差很遠。簡直是耐人尋味,蠻有趣的。

皇室繼承人與民眾呼吸同樣的空氣。
Some heirs put on airs.
有些繼承人會擺架子(亦可指「裝腔作勢」)。
The child ate eight pieces of cake and fell ill.

The bank is located by the bank of the river.
該銀行坐落河流岸邊。
For whom the bell tolls?
鐘聲為誰鳴?(此乃文學名著的書名,在此借用直譯而已)。
Why, for the belle!
當然是為那絕世美人(此字取自法文)。
Some leaves fall from trees in the fall.
有些樹葉凋落於秋季(是「autumn」在美國的代用詞)。
Standing on one's head with feet in the air is quite a feat.
以頭倒豎腳朝天,可算超卓之舉。
Are you game for a game of cards?
你可會樂意參與紙牌遊戲?
The counsel to the Council advises against action.
律師(法律顧問)建議議會不要採取行動。
In the play, he will play a part.
在話劇中,他會扮演一個角色。
Using flour to mould a flower requires skill.
