酸甜苦辣是形容食物的味道，但亦可引伸形容感覺，中文如此，英文亦如是。
剛去世的美國女歌手雲妮侯斯頓(Whitney Houston)唱過的名曲《我會永遠愛你》(I'll always love you)中一句歌詞：
Bittersweet memories
that is all I'm taking with me.
苦中帶甜的回憶
就是我唯一帶走的
其中的形容詞bittersweet形容的是感覺，當然也可以用來形容味道。這形容詞本身由兩個形容詞「bitter」和「sweet」組成。
Bitter形容感覺痛苦
「Bitter」形容味道苦澀，用於形容感覺就是痛苦、憤恨。用於形容事物就是說這些事物令人感到痛心、痛苦。例如：
The vegetables have a bitter taste. They must have got rotten.
這些蔬菜有一股苦味，一定是變壞了。
He still feels bitter whenever he thinks about his wife's death.
每次想起妻子的死，他都感到一陣苦楚。
We learn and grow through bitter experiences.
我們在苦澀的經驗中學習和成長。
Sweet可指歡樂開心
「Sweet」形容甜味，用於形容感覺時，指一些歡樂開心的感覺。用於形容事物時，指一些令人歡樂開心的事物。例如：
These candies are very sweet. They are not good for your health.
這些糖果十分甜，對健康無益。
He for sure enjoyed the sweet feeling of winning the competition.
他肯定十分享受勝出比賽的甜美感覺。
He still remembers the sweet moments with his wife.
他仍然記得與妻子一起的甜蜜時光。
Bittersweet是苦中帶甜
「Bittersweet」當然就是指味道又苦又甜。Bittersweet chocolates指的就是濃度很高的黑朱古力，甜中帶苦。前面說到的歌詞中，「bittersweet memories」就是說苦樂參半，有苦有樂的回憶。所以「bittersweet」說的不只是味道，亦可說感覺和事物。又例如：
He often talks about his bittersweet childhood in the squatter area.
他常常談起童年時住在寮屋區，生活苦中帶甜。
We shall always remember those bittersweet days in the 1990s.
我們將會記住上世紀90年代苦中帶甜的日子。
