這兩個英文形容詞「dissatisfied」和「unsatisfied」十分相似，同樣源自「satisfy」，但用法和意思皆不同，故此很容易混淆。要清楚這兩個字的分別，必須先明白「satisfy」的不同解釋和意義。
「satisfy」稱心滿意
首先，動詞「satisfy」可解作提供某人想要的東西，或者滿足某人的需要，令人感到稱心滿意。例如：
The restaurant provides different kinds of food to satisfy the customers.
那餐廳供應不同種類食物，以滿足顧客的需要。
在這個意義上，satisfy主要是指「令人滿意」，其過去分詞為「satisfied」，則用來形容人感到滿意或滿足的感覺。例如：
He was rather satisfied with his exam results.
他對於自己的考試成績感到相當滿意。
「dissatisfied」內心感受
與這相關的「dissatisfied」，是「satisfied」的相反詞，形容人對某些狀況不滿意，希望得到改變、改善，是一種內心感受。例如：
The dissatisfied customers complained to the Consumer Council.
不滿意的顧客向消費者委員會投訴。
要說明對甚麼事感到不滿意，可以用「dissatisfied with something」。
Many people are dissatisfied with the present economic situation.
許多人都對現時的經濟狀況感到不滿意。
「satisfy」符合要求
然而，動詞「satisfy」亦可解作滿足某些條件、符合某些要求。例如：
If you want to study in that university, you have to satisfy the entrance requirements.
如果你想入讀這所大學，你必須符合入學要求。
Supply of houses cannot satisfy the demand of the citizens.
房屋供應量不能滿足市民大眾的需求。
「unsatisfied」客觀狀況
基於這個意義而引伸的形容詞「unsatisfied」，則指不能達到某些條件，或者不能滿足某些需求，這就不是說感受，而是一種客觀狀況。例如：
There is an unsatisfied demand of skilled labour in the district.
區內的技術勞工短缺。（對技術勞工的需求得不到滿足）
有時，unsatisfied亦可以專用於某些人，指這些人的訴求沒有滿足，也是一種狀態。例如：
The angry crowd will not just leave unsatisfied.
訴求得不到滿足，憤怒的群眾不會離開。
由此可以明白這兩個字的分別：「dissatisfied」說的是個人不滿意，是一種內心感受。「unsatisfied」說的則是一些事情得不到解決，需求得不到滿足，是一種客觀狀況。
People feel dissatisfied when their demands are unsatisfied.
當人們的需求得不到滿足，他們就會感到不滿意。
