體味《孤星淚》之一
法國大文豪雨果（Victor Hugo，1802-1885）的最著名小說《悲慘世界》（另譯《孤星淚》，法文原名Les Misérables，大致讀如lay mi-za-RAHB），以法國大革命為背景，描述當時的人民慘況。此傑作給拍成電影多次，大家最熟悉的可能是去年由曉治．積曼（Hugh Jackman）等巨星主演的英國歌劇版本。本片幾乎沒有淨對白，差不多所有對白都是以歌曲的形式唱出，而幾乎全部歌曲都沿用同名的著名歌劇。
唱出夢想 哀訴被騙
當中最著名的一首歌，大概是由在表演比賽節目《英國達人》（Britain's Got Talent）中一鳴驚人的蘇珊．博爾伊（Susan Boyle）所獻唱的《我曾有夢》（I Dreamed a Dream）。這首歌在電影中由女主角芳汀（Fantine）唱出，哀訴她曾經給男人欺騙，最後不僅要變賣頭髮和牙齒，更淪為妓女。簡潔的歌詞，道盡了她的悲慘辛酸。開首是這樣的：
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong
（曾幾何時，男人良善
他們語氣柔和
他們言詞親切
曾幾何時，愛是盲目
世界是一首歌

然後一切出錯）
特別值得留意是如何押韻，例如kind和blind，inviting和exciting，song和wrong等。接着是以I dreamed a dream開首的一段，緬懷過去歡樂時光：
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted
（我曾有夢，流逝的夢
當年滿懷希望
人生充滿價值
我夢見，愛不消逝
我夢見，上帝寬大
當年我年輕無懼

請特別留意最後四行的歌詞如何優美。然後，歌詞以較詩意的方式道出情景驟變：
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
（然而老虎夜間到來
他們聲線柔和如雷
他們撕裂你的希望
他們令你夢想蒙羞）
到了末段，歌者道出了自己好像滿懷希望，其實深感絕望：
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living

現實與期望大不同
生活扼殺了我的夢）
