Discussions may open the door to a peaceful solution of the problem.
Improving the transport system opened the door to further development of the region.
The move of the president has closed the door on a resolution of the crisis.
Your arrogant manner will only shut the door on further negotiations.
對於這種情況,可用短語have a/ one foot in the door(一隻腳踏進了門口)描述。 引申開來, have a/ one foot in the door意思是踏前一步,以備將來再進一步:
He wants to pursue a career in the movie industry. Now he has one foot in the door because the director has given him a role in the new film.
It is not a great success, but at least it is a foot in the door.
He started working in the company as an office assistant. It was not a high tier job but he got his foot in the door. Now he is the managing director.
所以 a foot in the door 就是入機會之門的第一步。■Lina CHU
