First open selection of UN chief starts

¦]¦¹¥þ¬q¥i^Ķ¦p¤U¡GThe United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will end his term on December 31 this year. To increase transparency, the UN adopted a historic open process for the selection of the next Secretary-General. The UN began on 12 April three days of "interviews" at its headquarters in New York, during which the Montenegrin Foreign Minister Igor the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova, and the former Portuguese Prime Minister Guterres introduced themselves and outlined their visions on stage respectively and answered questions from UN member states and the worldwide public.

They delivered speech in both English and French. Igor came first, saying that the UN should re-invent multilateralism under the principles of responsibility, inclusiveness and engagement. He also called for more voice of women and youth in UN affairs, and greater regard for the balance between the northern and southern hemispheres.

Bokova said that the 21st Century had to be the century of a true commitment to equality between the sexes, and she had long been fighting for gender parity over her tenure as the head of UNESCO. She believed that the UN Secretary-General was in a position holding "strong moral authority" and should seek cooperation among countries to tackle international issues.

Guterres emphasized that the UN should become more efficient because the organization was talking more than making decisions. Making actual progress in various matters was, he believed, the main duty of the person at the helm. He suggested that conflicts, inequality, human rights violations and environmental destruction were increasingly interlinked, and prevention could be a key solution.

More "interviews" were held with other candidates appearing on April 13 and April 14.¡½Ãe¹Å»ö
