文憑試中的English Language Paper 1 (Reading) 有兩部分，而Paper 1佔英文科成績的20%。要在這卷中取得優異成績，除了平日要多練習skim reading and rapid reading外，考生亦應掌握處理不同題目的技巧。
根據考試局在2015 年English subject的briefing session裡指出 ，就2015 Paper 1(A)來說，考生面對有關contextual meaning題目的表現較為遜色，因此今天將會簡述這類題目。
測字詞意思 內文有提示
此類題目通常測試同學對某些詞語在文中的意思，例如：
China's top food watchdog said the content of trans fat in homemade baby formula abides by national and international standards, contrary to a media report claiming that some milk powder contains too much of the substance.
What is the meaning of the word group "abides by" ?
a. Follows b. Overlooks c. Fails d. Disregards
倘若你不懂這個詞語，你仍然可以從上文下理推斷出這個詞語的意思：從以上的例子，最大的contextual clues（提示）就是下一句子中的contrary to和too much，因此A是正確答案。
答案附近尋
要處理這類題目，切記以下3點：
1. 這類問題可以MC question或 open-ended question的形式出現；
2. 如果是以MC question的形式出現，你應先看清所有available options，才選擇答案；
3. 通常文中會有足夠的clues去幫助你找出答案，雖然大部分會在問題詞語附近，但亦有可能出現在previous or next paragraphs（上一段或下一段）中，這就是考評局要求同學應留意wider （更廣的）contextual clues 或inter-paragraph（段落間的） clues的原因。
