繼續與大家分享實用易串的英文生字，今次先介紹的是「muse」。我們常用「inspiration」去表達「靈感」，其實也可以用「muse」去代替，例如：The muse that Mrs Smith has is the force that makes her want to write, paint and make music to express herself，意思是「史密夫太太所得到的靈感是令她想要寫作、畫畫和做音樂去表達自己的動力。」。
我們亦可把「muse」當作動詞使用。當「muse」被用作動詞時，意思就不再是「靈感」，而是有to think carefully about something for a time, ignoring what is happening around you（為一件事深思熟慮，沉思到忘記周圍一切）」的意思。所以，我們可以用「muse」去代替「chew over, contemplate, excogitate, meditate, mull, mull over, ponder, reflect, ruminate, speculate, think over」等字。例子：I sat quietly and mused on all the events of the day. 這兒，「muse」就表達了「細想」的意思 ，全句解作：我靜靜地坐下來，細想今天發生的所有事。
很多人都問我，如果想表達「死記」，英文應該怎樣說？其實，我們可以用「rote」這個字。「rote」的定義是the process of learning something by repeating it until you remember it rather than by understanding the meaning of it，即是以重複學習同一樣東西，直到自己記得而非明白的一個方法。例子：In most Hong Kong schools, most students learn by rote.其意思是：在大部分香港學校，學生都是用「死記」的方法學習。
我們也可以這樣寫：Rote learning takes place in most Hong Kong schools.其意思和以上的例子基本上是一樣的。我們可以加入It is adjective to see that在這句子的開頭去表達情感或感受：It is sad to see that rote learning takes place in most Hong Kong schools.
「saga」作傳奇 「sham」乞人憎
最後想為大家介紹的兩個字是「saga」和「sham」。「saga」意思是「A long story of heroic achievement」，中文可以解作「傳奇」。我們可以這樣用「saga」這個生字： Her novel is about the real-life saga of a prestigious Chinese family in Tang Dynasty (她的小說是關於一個唐代顯赫中國家庭的真人真事傳奇。)
「sham」的意思是「A person who pretends to be someone or something they are not」，中文可以解作「虛偽的人／偽品／虛假」。我們可以這樣用「sham」這個生字：Johnson was an absolute sham, totally unqualified for his job as a senior doctor (莊臣是個絕對虛偽的人，完完全全不符合當高級醫生這份工作。)
這幾次所分享的生字都是由三個和四個英文字母組成，超級容易串和記，它們雖然很少在香港的英文教科書出現，但絕對是英美兩國人的常用字。大家不妨多多使用，增加自己的生字容量，令自己的用詞豐富起來以外，更會為你的老師或外國朋友帶來驚喜。■馬漪楠
