病毒肆虐之後，衞生問題更加受注目，蒼蠅一類的昆蟲當然是人們最不願見到的。蒼蠅（fly）這黑色小小的昆蟲，常在衞生較差的環境出現，既會污染食物，亦會在動物間傳播疾病，被人視為害蟲。
舊約聖經亦有提到蒼蠅，傳道書第十章第一節說「Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour...」（死蒼蠅使藥劑師的油膏發出臭霉氣味），據說這是英文用語fly in the ointment的來源。用fly in the ointment比喻一些人或事，意思是這些人或事破壞了原本美好正面的事物或環境，他們的出現令到本來快樂或成功的場合變得不完美，有遺憾，所以fly in the ointment指的是缺陷、美中不足的地方，令人掃興的人或事。
The family members think he is the fly in the ointment because he doesn't relate quite well with his brothers.
他與兄弟們不大融洽，家庭成員都覺得他破壞了氣氛。
The trip was really enjoyable; the fly in the ointment was that the return flight was delayed and we had to wait at the airport for several hours.
這趟旅程真的很愜意；美中不足的是回程航班延誤，我們要在機場苦候多個小時。
蒼蠅飛入屋內，多會黏在牆壁上，由於細小，無聲無息，不易被人察覺，英文亦有用語fly on the wall（牆上的蒼蠅）。把某人比喻作fly on the wall，即是他在現場，但置身事外，不被發覺，可以靜觀現場發生的事情。
Don't intrude if the two really argue when they meet. You can be a fly on the wall.
那兩人相遇時如果真的吵起來，不要介入。你大可袖手旁觀。
I would really like to have been a fly on the wall when she refused his proposal.
當她拒絕他的求婚時，我真想可以在場看到。
有一種節目叫fly-on-the-wall documentary（旁觀式紀錄片），即是攝影機像牆上的蒼蠅，不干預片中人物的真實生活，只如實記錄和播出他們的現場行止，沒有布景或採訪。
These TV fly-on-the-wall documentaries are well liked because they reflect real life situations.
這些旁觀式電視紀錄節目十分受歡迎，因為如實反映現實生活狀況。
動物身邊亦常見蒼蠅，例如牛、羊、馬站着不動的時候，會有很多蒼蠅附在牠們身上或是繞着牠們飛，但是動物在跑動的時候通常不會吸引蒼蠅，因為蒼蠅不能黏着跑動的動物。行動敏捷的動物身上不見蒼蠅，成為英文一個比喻，there are no flies on someone （他身上沒有蒼蠅），即是這人非常活躍，行動迅速，工作不怠慢，不浪費時間。引申開來，亦可說這人迅速掌握狀況，聰明靈活，很精明，不容易受騙。
There are certainly no flies on her. She is smart, works fast and well.
她是很幹練的人，聰明伶俐、勤快、工作卓越。
She won't be persuaded into buying his old car. There are no flies on her.
她不會被說服購買他的舊車，她精明得很，不會上當。
蒼蠅不受歡迎，但在不同環境會有不同象徵，膏藥中的蒼蠅是缺陷；牆上的蒼蠅是旁觀者；而某人身上不見蒼蠅，即是說這人行動快捷、很精明。■ Lina CHU
