The government will spend HK$2.2 billion to connect the cycle tracks throughout the western and eastern parts of the New Territories in phases. Upon completion, the network will form 112 kilometers of leisure travel routes stretching from Sai Kung to Shatin and Sheung Shui and then onwards to Tuen Mun and Tsuen Wan. Cyclists will be able to enjoy the scenery of Mai Po and Nam Sang Wai along the way. According to the Development Bureau, the first phase of the project, which involves the route from Ma On Shan to Sheung Shui, will commence shortly this year in September and finish by 2012. The construction is expected to create 1,610 jobs.
Currently, there are a number of cycle tracks scattering around the New Territories North East and North West. Cyclists can ride on bicycle from Shatin to Ma On Shan and Tai Po but there is no onward link to the bicycle trail between Fanling and Sheung Shui. Then in between Sheung Shui and Tuen Mun, there is not any cycle track. The Civil Engineering and Development Department has recently proposed a HK$2.2 billion project to build a cycle track network traversing the North East and North West of the New Territories, linking Shatin to Sheung Shui, Tuen Mun and Tsuen Wan. An extension from Ma On Shan to Sai Kung has also been suggested.
The first phase of the project involves linking up cycle tracks between Ma On Shan and Sheung Shui. It is going to commence this September and is expected to finish by 2012. The first phase will cost HK$230 million and create 227 jobs. The second phase will start in August next year. It aims to link up Tuen Mun and Sheung Shui and is expected to finish in July 2013. The third phase will commence in 2011 in stages and the resulting track will connect Tsuen Wan to Tuen Mun upon completion in 2013. The fourth phase involves an extension leading from Ma On Shan to Sai Kung. It will begin in 2011 and will finish gradually by 2014.
The government has planned to carry out large scale landscaping works for the existing cycle track network and will improve the present cycling facilities along Sheung Shui, Fanling, Tai Po and Shatin. Tracks will be widened to meet up-to-date standards and more road signs will be installed. translated by 開明
