1922年,經營九龍巴士業務的九龍汽車有限公司,提供4座位之「紅邊」的士。首15分鐘收費一毫,之後每分鐘2仙。1924年,改為每英里收4毫。由於英文是taxicab,故早期音譯為「德施急」和「德時急」。
1925年起,還有「黃邊的士」和「金邊的士」。載客量由2人至6人不等。
1950年代,的士公司有中央、明星、上海、黃的士和金邊的士等。
1972年,海底隧道通車後,五顏六色之的士車身統一為今天所見的紅銀灰色。

In 1922, the Kowloon Motor Bus Co., the Kowloon bus operator, offered 4-seater taxi services with a red edge on the body. The fare was 10 cents for the first 15 minutes, and 2 cents for a minute after it. In 1924, the fare changed to 40 cents for the first mile.
The "Yellow Edge Taxi" and "Golden Edge Taxi" also appeared from 1925. Seaters were from 2 to 6.
In 1950s, the following taxi companies existed: Central, Star, Yellow, Shanghai and Golden Edge etc.
When the Cross Harbour Tunnel was activated in 1972, the different colours of taxis became red and grey silvers. ■鄭寶鴻 香港歷史博物館榮譽顧問
