Yun Shouping(1633–1690)was born to a prominent family in Changzhou, Jiangsu province. Yun abstained from participation in the civil service and devoted himself to painting and studied with his uncle Yun Xiang(1586–1656). Although he excelled in painting landscapes, Yun switched to paint flowers and birds in his middle age, adopting Xu Xi's (act.11th century)mogu("boneless")method of bird-and-flower painting. By emphasizing painting from life to capture the inner spirit of the subject, his works show a sense of freshness and simple elegance. Many painters followed his style of painting, forming the "Changzhou School of Painting". In addition, he was also talented in poetry, calligraphy and painting, which were acclaimed by his contemporaries as sanjue(the three excellences). Yun Shouping, Wang Shimin(1592–1680), Wang Jian(1598–1677), Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi(1642–1715)and Wu Li(1632–1718)were collectively known as the "Six Masters of the Early Qing Dynasty".
