為慶祝香港回歸祖國15周年（To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China），下月下旬將會舉行「國際軍樂匯演」（International Military Tattoo），由民政事務局主辦（presented by the Home Affairs Bureau），並得到中國銀行（香港）榮譽贊助（proudly sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong)）。海報的宣傳字句寫著：「國際勁旅雲集 香港首次大型軍樂步操匯演」（Hong Kong's first military tattoo spectacular by world famous military bands）。
Tattoo兩解 南轅北轍
最值得留意的英文字是tattoo，因為一些香港人可能知道它可解作「紋身」（也寫作「文身」，此外尚叫作「刺青」）。但上段提及的活動，應當與紋身無關吧？看到中英對照，聰明的各位大概已猜到tattoo與「軍樂匯演」有關。原來tattoo可解作「野外軍事表演」，用英文說就是an outdoor show by members of the armed forces that includes marching, music and military exercises（軍隊成員的戶外表演，包括步操、軍樂和軍事演習）。
英國酒吧 晚上召喚士兵
為何「野外軍事表演」會叫tattoo呢？原來在以前的英國，警察到了晚上會前去各間酒館（tavern(s)），把酒桶（cask(s)）的龍頭（faucet(s)或tap(s)）關掉（以前的動詞是toe），因而有tap-toe這個說法。後來，在晚上召喚士兵或水手便叫tap-toe，最終演變成tattoo，而意思也變為「野外軍事表演」。海報中把「軍樂匯演」說作Military Tattoo，即多了Military（軍事的）一字，也是常見的說法。
南太平洋 土著紋身技術
那麼為何tattoo又可解作「紋身」呢？紋身與軍事表演難道有關？非也。原來這兩個意思雖然現今都拼寫作tattoo，但兩者的字源完全不同。解作「紋身」的tattoo，源自南太平洋（southern Pacific Ocean）的馬克薩斯群島（Marquesas Islands），紋身的土著把這種技術叫作tatu，後來英文借用後便演變成了tattoo。
不管是解作「野外軍事表演」還是「紋身」，tattoo都有兩個讀音，那便是tat-TOO（tæ'tu:）和ta-TOO（tə'tu:），讀哪一個悉隨尊便。
最後談談spectacular一字。它常用作形容詞，解作壯觀的、令人歎為觀止的，例如a spectacular performance是精彩絕倫的表演。但海報是說military tattoo spectacular，即spectacular在這兒是名詞，意思跟形容詞相若，解作壯觀的場面、精彩的表演。 ■馮Sir
