前往英國倫敦旅遊的朋友，可能都會趁機看看一些著名音樂劇（musicals），當中不能不提的是Les Misérables（讀如lay mi-za-RAHB）。這齣令人大受感動的音樂劇改編自同名小說，這便是今天介紹的M字首巨著。作者是法國大文豪雨果（Victor Hugo，1802-1885）。
沿用法文書名 港譯《孤星淚》
書名值得多談一點：這是法國名著，英語世界沿用法文書名，而Les Misérables的字面意思是The Miserable (People)，即「悲慘的人們」、「可憐的人們」。中文常譯作《悲慘世界》，但香港人也常稱它作《孤星淚》。
雨果寫信給朋友時如此描述這部偉大的小說：「這部作品，是摻雜戲劇的歷史，從人生廣闊生活的特定角度，去反映如實捕捉住人類的一面巨大鏡子。」他還說過很著名的一句話：「但丁用詩歌造出一個地獄，而我呢，我試圖用現實造出一個地獄。」
書長逾53萬字 序寫人類慘況
這本書十分長篇大論，法文原著長逾53萬字。這兒不如介紹它的〈序〉（Preface），因為雨果在此一語中的，簡潔地說出人類的慘況及他寫這本小說的目的：
．「So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny;（只要因法律和習俗所造成的社會壓迫還存在一天，在文明鼎盛時期人為地把人間變成地獄並且使人類與生俱來的幸運遭受不可避免的災禍；）」
．「so long as the three great problems of the century - the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light - are unsolved;（只要本世紀的3個問題—貧窮使男子潦倒，飢餓使婦女墮落，黑暗使兒童羸弱—還得不到解決；）」
．「so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world; - in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth,（只要在某些地區還可能發生社會的毒害，換句話說同時也是從更廣的意義來說，只要這個世界上還有愚昧和困苦，）」
．「books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to be of use.（那麼，和本書同一性質的作品都不會是無用的 。）」
大概很難有人讀畢此書而不大受感動。不過話說回來：這樣的長度，當然讀畢的人其實不多。若各位給洋洋數十萬字嚇怕的話，改編的音樂劇和電影都很值得一看。 ■余 功
