Faux的意思近似false或fake,是形容詞,指某些東西是假的,只不過看起來與真品很相似,但不是真的,或者可以說是仿真。
Faux-leather goods are now quite popular among young people.
仿皮製品現時在年輕一族十分流行。
Be careful. These are just faux pearls;they are not genuine ones.
當心。這些只是仿真珍珠,不是真的珍珠。
Faux naif扮純情
Faux作為假的意思,有一個有趣詞組,就是faux naif。法文naif即是英文naive(天真)的意思。Faux naif就是假天真,香港俚語說的扮純情。
The artist gave a faux naif performance.
那藝人作了一次扮純情的表演。
Pas de deux二人共舞
至於pas,是表演藝術的名詞,特別是芭蕾舞,相當於英文的step或movement,指舞步或動作。芭蕾舞有一些環節稱為pas de deux(step of two),是男女二人舞。
當faux與pas連接起來,構成faux pas詞組,當中的faux雖然也有false的意思,卻不再指假冒物品,而是指錯誤或不當。
錯誤的pas或不當的pas是甚麼意思?如上面所說,pas是指step(舞步)或movement(動作)。引伸開來,可以指言行舉止。故此,faux pas是指不適當或不合乎社會禮節的言行舉止,是可數名詞,但眾數仍然是faux pas。
作為單數使用的faux pas:
It is surely a faux pas for a politician to make comments which are discriminating against women.
作為政治家,發表歧視女性的意見,實在是不當的行為。
She made certain criticisms about the performance of other members in her team, but soon realized that she had committed a faux pas.
她對隊內其他成員的表現說出了一些批評,但很快就發現自己的言行做法不恰當。
作為眾數使用的faux pas:
He has to resign because of the many faux pas he has made as an executive councilor.
作為行政會議成員,屢屢作出不當言行,他不得不辭職。
