在筆者正在閱讀的小說中有一段情節指，少年離家出走，途中遇上警察。警察問少年：「Are you ok, young man? You are looking a bit worse for wear.」（年輕人，你沒事吧？你看來精神很差。）我們可以想像那個少年四處奔波，已經十分疲倦，形容疲憊。這就是短語「the worse for wear」的意思。
機器久用 狀態不如之前
「worse」是「bad」的比較級形容詞（comparative adjective），現在作名詞使用，指很差的狀態；而「wear」指磨損，意思是一些東西用了一段時間，開始出現磨蝕或損壞。人也一樣，奔波勞累，就會有勞損。故此，「the worse for wear」可以用作描述一些東西已經用了很久，有損耗，用舊了，壞了，狀態已不甚好。
His car looks a bit the worse for wear. It must have been used for a long time.
他的車子看來有點殘舊。這車子肯定用了很長時間。
The furniture is much the worse for wear. They have to be replaced.
這些傢具殘破不堪。一定要換了它們。
醺醺大醉 狀態不佳
若用「the worse for wear」描寫一群人，即指這群人看起來如舟車勞頓，疲憊不堪。有些時候亦可解作喝了很多酒，醺醺大醉，醉酒的人不甚清醒、狀態不佳。
After the long hard journey, they all looked the worse for wear.
完成漫長而艱辛的旅程後，他們都顯得疲憊不堪。
They finally arrived home, feeling the worse for wear.
他們終於回到家了，感覺像筋疲力盡一樣。
When the police found him, he was the worse for wear after drinking.
警察發現他的時候，他已喝得酩酊大醉，神志模糊。
「none the worse for wear」絲毫無損
不過，英文也有「none the worse for wear」的說法，意思是經歷了一段時間，卻沒有絲毫破損，或者一點也沒有感到疲倦。
The house was built a hundred years ago, but it is none the worse for wear.
這房子在100年前建成，到了今天依然絲毫無損。
He appeared none the worse for wear after the harsh training.
他在嚴格訓練後仍然顯得沒有倦意，精神奕奕。
