英語常見外借字三之三
今期會介紹更多英文外借法文的例子。
「Curriculum vitae」、 「resume」意指「履歷」。我們常說的 「debut album」中的 「debut」，解作「首次登場」或「處女作品」。此外，到演唱會尾聲時，歌迷向偶像大喊 「安歌」，即「encore」 ，正確讀法為「on call」，因為法文的「en」的發音是「on」。有見及此，「ensuite」解作「套房」，應該讀成「on sweet」，而非「end sweet」。還有「entrepreneurship」（創業精神），而創業家則是「entrepreneur」。值得注意的是，在英文世界中，沒有一個字能完全代替「entrepreneur」的意思，最接近的是 「businessman」，但「生意人」未必是創業者，因為此字蘊含繼承父業的意思。由此可見，法文字在英文世界中有殿堂級地位，難有其他字代替其獨有的意思。
laissez-faire 不干預政策
提到與貿易相關的字，不能不提的是「laissez-faire」，解作「不干預政策」或「自由貿易政策」。香港之所以繁榮穩定，正有賴推行多年的「laissez-faire policy」，讓世界各地與我們進行貿易時，避免不少不必要的貿易關卡（trade barriers）。
