昨日是九九重陽節（Chung Yeung Festival、Double Ninth Festival），各位這幾天會否登高？登高望遠、高瞻遠矚是好的，不過自高自大、自視過高便不好了。
南極考察家飢寒喪命
「自高自大」這個成語，英文有另一個成語經常和它相提並論，那便是too big for one's boots，例如：Bearing in mind that she is blue-blooded, she has always been too big for her boots（她緊記着自己出身貴族，因而總是自高自大）。英國著名海軍軍官兼極地探險家史考特（Robert Scott）曾兩度展開南極之旅，可惜第二次回程時跟4名船員都因飢寒交迫而喪命。
他的探險事蹟記錄在杜利（Charles Turley）的《史考特船長的航海之旅》（The Voyages of Captain Scott）中，當中描述船上的廚師時這樣說：We shipped him at the last moment in New Zealand, when our trained cook became too big for his boots, and the exchange was greatly for the worse（我們於新西蘭在最後一刻才把他送到船上，當時我們訓練了的廚師變得趾高氣揚，但換了人後情況更差得多）。
小人物「飲」small beer
另一個說法原來與啤酒有關。港人常說small potatoes，意思是「小人物」、「無足輕重的人」或「無足輕重的事物」，這是美國人的說法，而英國人則會說small beer。而「自高自大」，可說think no small beer of oneself，字面意思便是「不覺得自己是無足輕重的人」。19世紀，英國律師、法官兼作家休斯（Thomas Hughes）的著名小說《湯姆．布朗的求學時代》（Tom Brown's School Days）這樣描述一群urchins（流浪兒童）：Here there was a hole about six feet deep and twelve feet across, over which the puffing urchins struggled to the opposite side, and thought no small beer of themselves for having been out of their depths（這兒有一個洞，大約6呎深12呎寬，這群流浪兒童氣喘吁吁地要走到另一邊，走出深坑後便感到自己很了不起）。
我們不用自覺是small beer，但過猶不及，也不要think no small beer of ourselves啊。 ■余功
