希望是積極生活的推動力。就算境況不如意，環境有困難，現實與理想不符，我們依然會抱着希望。語文也有很多常用語描繪這個心境。
短語「hope against hope」，是動詞，不只是說希望，而是說在情形不樂觀、希望隨時落空、不可能實現的時候，仍然抱存希望。所以意思是希望一些不大可能發生的事，或希望一些明知道是極不可能的事。
We hope against hope that they will do the right thing at the right time.
雖然不大現實，但是我們仍然希望他們在適當時間做適當的事。

這短語也表達了強烈的希望，儘管看不見實現希望的條件或理由，但仍然抱着一絲希望，祈望一些情況出現，絕處逢生。很多時，為了加強語氣，應用時會採用動詞的進行式。

另一個不時聽到的短語「hope for the best」， 其實亦有相似的意味。這是說作最好的希望，希望最好的情況出現，就算現實上並不樂觀。
The problem may not be fixed shortly. But the workers are working hard on it and we just have to hope for the best.
問題不可能在短期內解決。不過，工人們仍在努力處理，而我們只能作最好的希望。
It's not easy but let's hope for the best.
這事並不容易，不過我們作最好的希望吧。
這些短語可能帶些悲觀意味，但在看似不可能的時候仍然抱有希望hope against hope，不放棄，其實也是積極的一面。
