■光明磊落意指人「如白天般敞開」。 網上圖片
我城近日最流行的四字成語無疑是「光明磊落」，英文應怎麼說呢？可說(as) open as the day，字面意思是「如白天般敞開」。例如：Though some people do not understand them, they believe that they are as open as the day（雖然有些人不了解他們，但他們相信自己是光明磊落的）。寫得一手好英語的波蘭作家康拉德（Joseph Conrad）有一個短篇故事叫《決鬥：一個軍隊故事》（The Duel: A Military Story），這是在英國雜誌連載時的名字，後來在美國期刊刊登時易名為《榮譽的目的》（The Point of Honour）。當中這麼描述杜百達中尉（ Lieutenant D' Hubert ）：A cool head, a warm heart, open as the day. Always correct in his behaviour. One had to trust him（頭腦冷靜，心地溫良，光明磊落。行為舉止時刻正直。你不得不信任他）。
fair and square 公平的
跟「光明磊落」有點相似的是「光明正大」。除了用作名詞而解作「四方形」、「正方形」外，square尚可用作形容詞而解作「公平的」、「公正的」。「光明正大」可說fair and square，當中的形容詞fair同樣解作「公平的」、「公正的」。例如：The soccer match was thrilling and exciting, and they finally won it fair and square（那場足球賽緊張刺激，而他們最終贏得光明正大）；這裡強調的，是他們沒有打茅波，是純靠實力勝出。此外，fair and square的確可簡單地解作「公平的」。在美國幽默大師馬克吐溫（Mark Twain）的名著《頑童歷險記》（Adventures of Huckleberry Finn）中，主人公哈克（Huck）談到遇見一群頑童時有這麼一句：They talked it over, and they was going to rule me out, because they said every boy must have a family or somebody to kill, or else it wouldn't be fair and square for the others（他們為此商量，並打算把我排除在外，因為他們說每個男孩都應當有一個家庭或有人要殺，否則對其他人並不公平）。
