面對面，四目交投，眼神接觸是人與人溝通的重要一環。眼睛可以表達感情、態度和想法。英文亦有諺語以雙方眼神接觸比喻態度。譬如說，look someone in the eye（看着對方的眼睛），是指談話時直視對方雙眼，表示自己誠實、沒有隱瞞或欺詐，面無懼色：
Look me in the eye if you are not lying.
如果你沒有說謊，請你正視我雙眼。
He knew he was wrong and didn't dare to look his father in the eye.
他知道自己錯了，不敢正視父親雙眼。
see eye to eye用於否定句式
另外，如果大家意見一致，對某件事持相同看法，可以說 see eye to eye（眼光一致），互望一眼。不過，這句諺語通常用於否定句式，間接地說彼此意見不同：
The couple doesn't often see eye to eye about the education of their child.
在孩子的教育方面，這對夫婦常有不同意見。
He never sees eye to eye with his father.
他向來與父親意見相左。
這句see eye to eye諺語可以配用一些前置詞，以充實句子的內容。例如前置詞about/ on，是表述雙方對哪些事件意見一致或不同，而前置詞with則指出與哪些人意見一樣或不同：
They don't seem to see eye to eye with the government on the airport runway project.
在機場跑道工程一事上，他們顯然與政府看法不一樣。
eyeball to eyeball指對峙
另一個字面上很類似，但意思截然不同的諺語是eyeball to eyeball （眼球對準眼球）。這句諺語表達一種對峙的態度，指與敵人、對手或意見不同的人直接正面抗衡：
The debate is going to be an eyeball-to-eyeball competition between the two parties.
這場辯論將會是兩黨之間的正面鬥爭。
In the final, the team will be eyeball to eyeball with their opponents.
這支球隊將會在決賽與對手正面交鋒。
由此可見，兩個人面對面、四目交投可以有不同涵義。語文上的不同應用方法可以有不同效果。同樣，與人溝通時亦需要注意眼神表達的效力。■Lina CHU
