■歌舞綜藝表演可稱作song and dance。圖為貴州苗族同胞慶祝「苗年」。 資料圖片每逢有節日的時候，很多機構如電視台會舉辦一些綜藝節目，有歌有舞有搞笑。這類舞台表演，可以稱為music hall、vaudeville，這原本指演出這類節目的場地，但亦可直接用作這類表演的稱呼，即是歌舞雜耍搞笑的表演。要再簡單一些，就可以用song and dance：
The audience enjoyed the New Year vaudeville very much.
觀眾十分享受這個新年歡慶綜藝節目。
They have bought tickets for the music hall performance held this weekend.
他們買了這個周末的歌舞表演門票。
The performers gave a magnificent song and dance show. It was really entertaining.
表演者演出了一場華麗壯觀的歌舞，真的很有娛樂性。
喻託辭花言巧語
這類歌舞表演，通常都很花巧，令人眼花繚亂，可能由於這個原因，song and dance亦被解作花言巧語，指一些冗長、不着邊際的說話，或一些虛構、天花亂墜的故事，聽上去似乎是很複雜的解釋，其實卻是無關痛癢、毫不重要、旨在迴避主旨的托辭：
When asked how the money was spent, he simply gave some song and dance about how busy he was.
他被問到那筆錢怎樣花掉時，只是高談自己如何忙碌，說些不着邊際的話。
People want an answer for the problem, not a song and dance about things like government policies.
人們希望得到解決問題的答案，不是要聽到一些繞圈子的空話，諸如政府政策如何等等。
The management gave a long song and dance about why there should be a new requirement. Most were not convinced.
對於為什麼要有新的要求，管理層長篇大論說些無關重要的解說。大多數人都不接受。
「小題大做」
此外，亦有make a song and dance的說法，如果有人因為一些小事而作出過分的反應，就可以說他們make a song and dance about something，即是小事化大，令一些小事看起來比實際重要，引人注意，或者企圖令人以為情況比實際惡劣或困難，有點像「小題大做」：
It was just a small matter, nothing important, but she made a song and dance about it.
這不過是小事一樁，一點也不重要，可是她偏要小題大做，引人注意。
To stop people from making a song and dance about the case, the authority has to respond properly.
為免事件升溫化大，當局必須作出適當回應。
She never makes a song and dance about her ability; she just proves it by winning the games.
她從來不誇大自己的能力，只憑勝出比賽證明自己的實力。
可以看到，song and dance不單純是在舞台上的歌舞表演，亦可以是在生活環境中一些人的花言巧語、巧言令色，或者把小事化大、小題大做的行為。不同環境的用法，有不同的語意。■Lina CHU
