■Gloss可解作塗在嘴唇上的唇彩lip gloss，也解作掩蓋醜陋的美麗外衣。 網上圖片Gloss，名詞，有兩個常用的解釋。
一是不可數名詞，是塗在物件表面的光滑、亮澤物料，例如塗在傢具上令其表面有光澤的漆油是gloss paint，塗在嘴唇上的潤澤唇彩是lip gloss。引申出來，gloss亦指事物的美麗外表，掩蓋不太美好的真相。

Gloss的另一個用法是可數名詞，是書本或文章中一些字詞的註釋或評註，通常出現在頁邊或行間，所以有時會有glosses at the bottom of the page，即是頁尾附有某些生字或難字的註解。不過，gloss亦可解作一些用來粉飾事情的描述或解說，誤導令人以為某些事物比實際完美。
His book, which gives good glosses to the history of the country, is quite misleading.
他的書多處粉飾那國家的歷史，頗為誤導。
由此，有短語put a gloss on something（為某事塗脂抹粉），即是只強調美好以及對自己有利的一面，刻意隱藏不好的部分，文過飾非。
