筆者想起最近幾期，都在介紹使用什麼工具、怎麼使用、使用的思維，都是挺好懂的東西。這可能給了大家一個印象，即學英文不怎麼難，有方法有路徑，便能學好。
看似的確是這樣，不過事實殘酷。具體說的話，查字之類其實沒什麼難度可言，重點是，很多人看不懂一句句子，不是因為某個字，而是「每隻字都懂，加起來卻不知所云」。
句子難解，原因可以有很多，可能是某個關鍵字你自以為認識，可能是句子的構造你沒看明白，也有可能是作者本身就語焉不詳，想寫什麼自己也沒搞清楚，又或者他的表達能力不足......因為你無法確認是哪種情況，就會產生一種不踏實之感，心理陰影面積愈來愈大。給大家舉幾個例，出自於E.H. Gombrich的"The Story of Art"︰
The power of observation of nature, which we saw awakening in Greece about 500 BC was put to sleep again about AD 500. Artists no longer checked their formulae against reality. They no longer set out to make discoveries about how to represent a body, or how to create the illusion of depth.
朋友說看不懂Artists no longer checked their formulae against reality。相信這個句子裡每隻字大家都懂--大家都以為自己懂，不就是「藝術家們不再檢查反對現實」嗎？等一下，這樣好像不通；「對抗現實」？也不通。於是便糊塗了。
Against在這裡的意思，原來是「對比」。句子翻譯成「藝術家不再以現實為創作的參照」，便通了。Against既可解作反對、違反，又可解作緊靠、比較，更可解作預防。你能第一眼看到這個關鍵字便去翻字典嗎？這個屬於自以為懂的例子。
We can never do these works justice if we just pass them by in our museums, and devote no more than a quick glance to them. They were made to be appreciated by real connoisseurs, and treasured as pieces worthy of devotion.
朋友問，worthy of devotion是什麼意思？我說大概是worthy of devotion of study（值得細細研究品味）或者worthy of devotion of efforts to acquire（值得花費精力得到），又或者兩者的混合。說「大概」，是因為這裡作者沒有寫清楚，當然也有可能是筆者的理解力沒到位。
筆者只能勾劃一個範圍，在範圍內去理解，只要說得通，都可以。至於說得通的界限在哪裡，便和個人的語言造詣和學識有關。這個屬於語焉不詳的例子。
Here was another challenge for the artists to meet, another spur which urged them on towards yet greater achievements that would compel the surrounding world to accept them, not only as respectable heads of prosperous workshops, but as men of unique and precious gifts.
句子比較長，看似結構複雜，但其實作者的英文很好，寫得條理分明。Another spur相當於another challenge的延伸，後面一串都是描述這個challenge具體是什麼--是一種spur（動力），which後面把這個動力給出確切定義，that再解釋which的內容。
我們看到一個精確化的過程，範圍縮小，細節增加。可見在思維層面，英語使用者是以「先粗後細」的方式去思考。這個屬於句子結構不熟悉，無法把碎片串起來的例子。
需要強調的一點是，後面有提到challenge相當於social snobbery and prejudice（社會的不屑和偏見），所以這個字應譯作「障礙」；內文的意思是，既是障礙，也是動力。所以在這裡不應該理解為「挑戰」。
要解決上面的困難，筆者建議同學多和朋友討論，不要求標準答案，要求自己的理解、自己的想法。
